During the summer I can totally use long curtains since I wont be using the radiator but during the winter I cant use my black out curtains for fear that the steam will discolor them and that the hot air will not enter the room. For floor length curtains you should allow 1 inch 25cm clearance to avoid dragging.
Since many radiators are located in front of windows having long flowing curtains can be dangerous.
How long should curtains be radiator. So far that means that during the winter I use shorter curtains that hang to the top of the radiator box. If your window has a radiator below it the curtains should finish 2-3cm above the radiator so that the heat isnt blocked by the fabric. Sill length curtains usually finish 12 inch 125cm above the sill.
This of course can be adjusted for personal preference. Thankfully you do have options. Nowadays most radiators have TRVs thermostatic radiator valves.
Roman shades are the perfect solution when floor-to-ceiling curtains are not an option. Thermostatic Radiator Valves are probably more commonly known as TRVs and their main function is to control the air temperature of a space by automatically adjusting the amount of hot water that enters the radiator they are attached to. A TRV will allow you to have a little more control over the temperature in each room of your home making creating a warm and inviting space more efficient. Personally I much prefer short curtains to be just over the sill rather than sill length they look more elegant and still give the radiator a chance to work properly. If your radiators have TRVs fitting a Hive Radiator Valve is easy and therell be no need to drain your radiator so long as you already have a compatible valve attached.
Hi Ruthie Shorter curtains look great in smaller rooms where long curtains can make the room seem a bit fussy and cluttered. Hang curtains at least 4 to 6 inches above the top of the windows. If the valve on your radiator has a numeric dial eg 1-5 its a TRV.
Assuming youre outfitting a living room or bedroom with average ceiling height 8 feet high an interior designers rule of. Decide how high you want to hang your rod. If your radiators are covered your curtains should just brush the top.
You can even go closer to your moldings for maximum impact 34 from the bottom of the molding tends to look good. This allows the curtains to hang in long uniform folds. If your windows are over the kitchen sink above a bathroom counter or bathtub or behind a radiator its not practical to extend curtains to the floorbut the Roman shade is an elegant piece of décor that can instantly upgrade your space.
The general rule is t o mount the rod anywhere between halfway to two thirds between the top of the window frame and the ceiling or ceiling molding. You can opt for shorter curtains that land about an inch above the radiator. Curtains that fall below the sill usually finish 15cm 6 inches below.
